In neither case are we talking about modern equipment. The ethicality is a moot point- these computers where the service tag was user-editable long pre-dated even the Pentium III ID tag. (information is supported perpetually as long as they can look up information by service tag or prove that the service tag has been transferred from one user to the next.) The support is absolutely transferrable, regardless of warranty support. That BIOS in question had a number of quirks (including user-setting the Service Tag which is not allowed in later BIOS as far as I know) as well as the ability to get into BIOS from DOS/Windows. Those particular PC's had a different BIOS from anything more recent (late Pentium 1, Pentium MMX and later all have a different Phoenix BIOS.) That's why I was confused. Current systems should not work with that software.
Dell asset tag utility software#
The optiplex software you listed is proprietary and not even remotely current. I worked for Dell about 6-7 years ago, and the machines affected by the software you have listed were well into their retirement by that time. Dell has programs to perform service tag editing for all of all its systems - including Dimension systems - (the optiplex link is provided above), but apparently they're proprietary.Īny help in locating it would be much appreciated!!! But unsure if it works for Dimension systems.

I have heard of another Dell program called SVCTAG.exe used for entering service tag info for Dell laptops.

Unfortunately, defendants are still bound by law to pay defense attorney costs in this country even if the lawsuit is baseless! We could counter sue, but that takes more $$$ and doesnt guarentee a favorable outcome!! More $$$$$!!!Īnyhow, I'm aware of the program but I believe that's only used to install service tag ID's if the service tag info has not been previously entered in the BIOS (used to define the service tag field after a mobo replacement). Like I already said, we're trying to avoid any potential lawsuits - be it frivolous or not. Our prospective clients have consented so retaining service tag info is a moot point. Therefore, there is no client consideration which justifies retaining service tag IDs since original specification info is already being provided at the time of sale. In addition, the prospective clients are aware Dells unlimited technical support (using the term 'support' loosely here) for purchased systems is no longer valid.
Dell asset tag utility serial numbers#
Our buyers have no problems purchasing systems lacking serial numbers since the associated system warranties have expired and receipts have been made available to demonstrate proof of purchase. After that, its not difficult to determine exactly where the owner lives, place of business, telephone numbers via fraud. The service tag edit is being performed because any remote ISP/Web Site can uniquely identify our equipment utilizing the service tag info available on the BIOS. Your answer to those questions should absolve several of the implied ethical considerations some of you have regarding editing service tag info. So, its 'ethical' to perform a service tag edit in a Optiplex system, but 'unethical' to do so in a Dimension system? Right. If service tag editing is a illegitimate operation, why does Dell and HP provide public proprietary software which accomplishes just that? (see posted links above)ĭell already provides a sanctioned utility for editing service tag info in Optiplex systems. As for questions regarding legitimacy of a service tag edit, Ill answer those questions with another question: No, I haven't misunderstood what my employer wants (we're performing a hard drive and service tag swipe). Asset Tag is a secondary tag, set by the user in BIOS, that can be used by organizations to track a system for inventory purposes. Thanks for all the 'informative' responses. Service Tag is essentially your computer's 'serial number', set/locked in the BIOS by Dell, and is the primary number that Dell uses to track your system for support and billing purposes. They consist of one letter and two numbers in Halo 3 and an arbitrary combination of 4 letters or numbers in Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4. A Service Tag is a tag meant to identify players quickly during a match. The number is linked to your account and provides warranty information about your product.

The service tag number identifies your computer to the Dell technician or support representative. Locating the service tag on your Dell computer or laptop is essential in the event that your laptop needs servicing. What is a service tag number on a laptop?
Dell asset tag utility windows#
You can find it on the bottom part of laptops and either back or side of desktop computers, often right next to the Windows product key.
Dell asset tag utility code#
The service tag is basically a 7-digit code which consists of numbers and digits.
